What happens at the Learn 2 Curl?
The Learn to Curl is a fun, relaxed introduction to curling taking about two hours. The first part is an introduction on how to curl - how to throw the stone, how to sweep, and how the game is played. After that, teams are made up and we play a short game. After the game, there are food and drinks and social time. Instruction for stone delivery from the "hack" and using a stick are provided, so you are invited regardless of physical condition.
What do I need to bring?
Please bring a clean pair of tennis shoes to wear on the ice. We will give you "grippers" to put over your shoes for better traction on the ice. The air temperature in the ice house is around 40 degrees so you will want to dress in layers and bring a pair of gloves. We recommend that you wear loose fitting clothes. Sweatpants or running pants are typically more comfortable than jeans. The club will provide all the equipment that you will need.
Who may participate?
We have leagues for all ages 5th grade and up. See our website’s “Our Leagues” section for more details.
What if I want to curl and can’t make it to the Learn 2 Curl Event?
No problem. Contact us at Learn2Curl@curlwaupaca.com and we will try to arrange a time for you to come to the club. Most Friday evenings also provide an opportunity to Learn2Curl. Leagues typically start a week after our open houses with the first evening being a practice game. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to practice before leagues start.
How do I find a team?
There are always teams and leagues looking for new curlers. When you sign up on your membership registration form you will check the leagues that you want to curl. The Chairperson for that league will then find you a team of experienced curlers to curl with you.
What are the expectations of a new curler?
Show up on time, be ready to learn, and have a good time. Nobody expects a new curler to throw stones like an Olympian. League Chairpersons will make up evenly balanced teams based upon the players experience and ability.
How do I register for a Learn 2 Curl Event?
You can register for this event by contacting us at Learn2Curl@curlwaupaca.com. There is a $20 fee for adults, but students are free. This fee covers instruction, drinks and snacks, and can be taken as a credit on your registration for the year.
