Learn to Curl 2018 - October 20th -24th

What happens at the Learn 2 Curl Classes?

The Learn to Curl event is an introduction to the sport of curling. The Event is divided into two classes. During the first class, Stone Delivery, you will be given a short off the ice instruction on how the game is played, and an explanation of the rules, terminology, and equipment. After that you will move onto the ice where an instructor will teach you the proper way to deliver and sweep a stone. This class will last about two hours.

During the next class, Learn the Game, you will get to play an actual game with experienced curlers. The instructors will continue to help you with your delivery as well as teach you about the rules and etiquette of the game. A game typically lasts two hours.

What do I need to bring?

You do need to bring a clean pair of tennis shoes to wear on the ice. The soft-soled rubber of the tennis shoes will provide more traction than a hard-soled dress shoe. The temperature on the ice is around 40 degrees so you will want to dress in layers and bring a pair gloves. We recommend that you wear loose fitting clothes. Sweatpants or running pants are typically more comfortable than jeans. The club will provide all the equipment that you will need.

Who may participate?

We have leagues for all ages 5th grade and up. See our website’s “Our Leagues” section for more details.

What if I want to curl and can’t make it to the Learn 2 Curl Event?

No problem. Contact us at Learn2Curl@curlwaupaca.com and we will try to arrange a time for you to come to the club. Leagues typically start a week after our open houses with the first game being a practice game. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to practice before leagues start.

How do I find a team?

There are always teams and leagues looking for new curlers. When you sign up on your membership registration form you will check the leagues that you want to curl. The Chairperson for that league will then find you a team of experienced curlers to curl with you.

What are the expectations of a new curler?

Show up on time, be ready to learn, and have a good time. Nobody expects a new curler to throw stones like an Olympian. League Chairpersons will make up evenly balanced teams based upon the players experience and ability.

How do I register for a Learn 2 Curl Event?

You can register for this event by contacting us at Learn2Curl@curlwaupaca.com. First, tell us which of the three Stone Delivery lessons you want to take as well as the names of those attending.  Second, tell us which of the two Learn the Game classes you will attend.  The times and dates for the classes are listed below, all classes last roughly two hours.  There are limited spots for each class so register early. There is a $10 fee for adults, but students are free. This fee covers instruction, drinks, snacks, and a dinner following the Learn the Game class.
